What is dribble rash?

Dribble rash is typically a red rash on the skin that may be slightly raised or cracked associated with irritation of skin because of moisture from drooling. Saliva is full of enzymes and removes bacteria in the mouth. The consequence is when left in contact with skin, it can cause irritation.

Why do babies drool

Adults and babies both produce saliva. Saliva has a range of benefits, including helping to wash away bacteria and lubricate the digestive system. Until babies have most of their teeth around two years of age, it is difficult for them to control drooling as the teeth create a natural barrier. As a result, babies drool.

During teething, it is not uncommon for baby drooling to increase, exacerbating the risk of dribble rash.

Ways to prevent dribble rash

The best approach to prevent dribble rash is to keep your baby dry. A quality bib will help wipe up excess drool and keep it off their chest. Our bibs use a backing specially chosen not just for its soft luxurious feel but for the ability to absorb large amounts of moisture extremely fast. Our backing can absorb 10x its weight in under 2 seconds. This helps to draw moisture away from your baby but also promotes evaporation quicker off the bib to keep an all day dryness.

If your child is teething, try a cool teether and avoid using soaps that can dry the skin.

How to treat dribble rash

There are several topical treatments for dribble rash including items such as Sudocrempaw paw cream or vaseline. These creams create a barrier to stop the moisture, but if you have concerns, contact a doctor. For severe cases, or other ailments like eczema, an alternate treatment may be required.
